The FDA has authorized the over the counter sale of Plan B, a morning after pill less controversial than RU 486 to women 18 years old or older. Those younger than 18 will have to present a doctor's note at the pharmacy. This is more than I ever expected from the Bush administration.
Most urban and suburban communities have free community clinics that will not only provide a doctor's note but also dispense the medication, free or at little cost. There's one in my town. I have worked there both as a volunteer and employee.
In small town America, I suspect that there are sympathetic physicians who are known to maintain confidentiality and discreet pharmacists.
George Bush is really going out on a limb with his Christian conservative base on this and I salute him for it.
Since I always try to be both honest and pragmatic, I would be remiss if I didn't bring up this point, which I am sure George Bush and James Dobson are both aware of. It's hard to imagine there are many sexually active teenage girls in this country who don't have a sympathetic older girlfriend who would be willing to buy the pill for them. So GW and Dr Jim aren't really giving up very much.

Thank you for your response. I think that one thing we can both agree on is that the " Right to Life" issue is the most vexing social rift in our society since slavery. That one took a Civil War to settle and the repercussions are still with us today. The partisans of this issue are not divided geographically but demographically. A civil war may not be in our future but I think there are worse things even than that. Free and open exchange of ideas, with empathy and insight into the views of others is a good thing.
Dave....Well....women's rights and human rights are suppose to be the same thing...but on the issue of reproduction it isn't! The child has no rights under the Constitution until birth. Thank God Caesarian Section is included in "natural birth" otherwise my two daughters would not be American Citizens let alone human beings!
Anyway...the " B-pill" that is now been blasted out on to our society IS NOT A BIRTH CONTROL PILL. It is a chemical that terminates a Zygote either before implantation or interferes with its' implantation.
The issue wouldn't even be arguable if all would remember their high school Biology! The instant a sperm penetrates an egg...the "entity" CREATED by re-establishment of the diploid chromosome number will NEVER OCCUR AGAIN in all of etermity. The ONLY difference between the Zygote and a Constitutionally protected American is 9 months! Why does anyone who has been born get Constitutional protection but a Zygote has to wait 9 months? Hmmmm...maybe it was an insurance agent who wrote Roe vs Wade!
(JUST A THOUGHT.....If insurance companies recognized Zygotes as people too, think of how many more policies they could sell! Ah....you say they would go broke because people would collect on abortion. Well...you can't collect on suicide so it's obvious that abortion is exempt as well!)

To comment Murder Ink.....PLEASE RE-READ YOUR OLD HIGH SCHOOL BIOLOGY BOOK. The baby is NOT part of the mother. It is genetically half of her and half of the father. It has as much "right to life" as you or I. Just because the child is microscopic and you can't "see" him or her DOES NOT MEAN it is not a life independant of ourselves and has the same Constitutional rights as we do.
What don't you understand about the nature of "sexual reproduction" in mammals?

Do you not realize that our "gene pool is turning into a "cesspool" because of the "unnatural" removal of "genes" by abortion AND homosexual intercourse?
The reason Darwinism is not atheistic or evil is that IT proves the Existence of God because it is "Natural Selection." Want proof?...Look at the beautiful diversity of living organisms we have on this planet. That's not evil friend..that's the beauty of God! The second greatest lie is that Darwinism contradicts the Book of Genesis in the Torah. NOTHING could be farther from the truth! The sequence of Creation in the Bible IS PHYLOGENETIC and is compatible with the Heterotroph Hypothesis! (Google 'em)
We all have a wonderful God given gift of Free Will but I am affraid too many "want their cake and eat it too!" Free Will without consequences for immoral choices is NOT FREE WILL.
The greatest argument against abortion is not neccessarily a moral or issue of individual rights. IT IS PURE MATHEMATICS!
